In the US, you can't trust the media for accurate, objective news these days. The fact that it bothers you the German news sources got this wrong is probably a good sign of the quality of German news. Laziness, biased opinion, and commercial manipulation probably hasn't been imported into your borders yet.

What keeps me away from news channels are the dominating negative stories. Granted, coverage on tragedies and politics garner more views and ratings, but it also makes people bitter and unpleasant to be around. A positive news story is very uplifting and it's a shame that there isn't a good balance between that and the negative.

By far the most degrading aspect of American news programs are the CG introductions and sensational titles they give certain continuing stories. Like that "Operation Iraqi Freedom" logo featuring a bald eagle flying towards the screen while shooting fiery missiles from it's wings, with the stars and stripes waving majestically in the background. Just can't help but agree that the army rocks, break out in patriotic tears of pride and have a wank over piece of apple pie after that one, can ya?
