New trailer of the upcoming MadWorld. Needless to say it maybe their best effort yet (Viewtiful Joe was good, God Hand was okay, Okami was really impressive).

Lies. God Hand was great! It's because of God Hand that I'm so excited for MadWorld!

Is that Steven Jay Blum voicing Jack? He just doesn't seem appropriate.

Tell me about God Hand. I remember it looked lame but ended up being a kind of cult favorite.

I admire this maximizing grit and machoness to the point of kitsch, but coupled with the lack of color (even gray) means it has nothing to keep itself from getting boring but new and exciting ways to gruesomely kill people. One of the other trailers took place in a subway station, where Jack offed one of the goons by holding his face against the side of a fast-moving train, so I'm not saying it can't be done, but they're walking quite the tightrope. Looks potentially fun (if not heavily aimed at the torture-porn fan, which I can't say I am), but it's not gonna come close to doing anything about Suda51's status as gaming's Quentin.

I think of God Hand as a humorous Ninja Gaiden. The gameplay is about as difficult and just as rewarding. It's hard not to have a good time in the atmosphere of the game, which just delights in parody, slapstick, and offensiveness. You've probably heard of the midget Power Rangers, the giant gay circus twins, and the taking of female opponents over your knee.

There's also that charm that so many old Genesis brawler games had of beating up a ton of guys to get to the next level and often getting your ass handed to you. With so many FPS's, open world games, and new, innovative best-sellers, it's really satisfying to play this old-school brawler type of game. It's, ah, just FUN.

This article puts it better than I can.

God Hand is a great game. It's basically just a 3D beat-'em-up where you can customize your own combos and moves, and it's probably the last genuinely funny game I can remember playing.

Personally I'm finding the white/black/red aesthetic pretty old hat by this point, and I wonder how easy it'll be to actually make out what's happening, but eh, we'll see.

In God Hand, there's this attack called the ball-buster, and it's pretty much what it sounds like. It's not a generic kick to the balls though, he turns his back to the enemy and gives a straight kick from behind, if I recall correctly.

BUT ANYWAY. In the second level, some of the enemies are women in S&M gear, and I thought "Oh, I'll just use the ball-buster attack on them. It'll be funny cause it'll do damage despite the fact that they have no balls. Haha".

Yeah, absolutely no damage of course, and I wasted some energy bar using it, but I couldn't help but smile at the fact that they would add something so seemingly trivial to the game.

I'm indifferent to this one.

The black-red-and-white looks nice, but I'm not a huge fan of glorified gore. It has to be done perfectly right for me to like it. In a video game where special deaths tend to be repeated over and over, it could get old really quickly. And the gore sequences by themselves aren't enough to get me excited.

God Hand is probably my favorite game of all time. But yeah, mad world looks awesome. It looks even more violent than gears of war but it looks a lot more humorous. I'm seriously thinking of getting a wii now because I want this game, Muramasa the demon blade and No More Heroes.

It's out. Carnage ensures everywhere.

It is a crappy brawler with rap music.

Quite right, if by crappy you mean 'excellent'.

It's easier and shallower than God Hand, but it's arguably just about as fun, and the (somewhat distracting, if amusing) commentary by Greg Proops and John DiMaggio add to the overall gritty atmosphere. It's a bit short, but then, that's what hard mode is for.

...and SEGA...just let them get away with it? Holy shit.

It is just SEGA rolling in their own shite.

Madworld is just as bad as Sonic and the Black Knight. A lame, childish brawler filled with swears is not exactly impressive.

Quite talented at pulling this stuff out of your ass, aren't you? Platinum (formerly Clover) developed the game, Sega only published it.

I fail to see what's so childish about MadWorld. Sure, it's ridiculously violent and bloody... that's the point of it. An original beat-em-up with ridiculous levels of violence far exceeds a half-assed attempt to foist a video game character into Arthurian legend, I think.

I have taken a liking to the soundtrack of this game. Rap and hiphop isn't normally something I listen to but it fits well. That and the Bosses are just as crazy as the ones from No More Heroes, if not more.

Well I think stuff like GTA is childish too. It just does not seem 'cool' to me. Maybe if I was 14.

And I know who developed it, but did Japanese people do the English voices or did SEGA? And who do you think owns the franchise (as far as I know, SEGA, not Platinum - just as SEGA as Wonderboy).

I don't know, the bosses from No More Heroes had more dialogue and thus more "character"; the bosses you encounter in MadWorld are far more out there, but say a lot less. I was hoping they'd say more. Ah well.

Your point being...? I don't really care for GTA, either, but it has more to do with how it plays and less with the type of content it deals with. I don't go around belittling the people who play them, though. Further, I certainly don't mind bloody violence in my video games, but I can see how such content could overshadow the actual game itself. However, MadWorld is a solidly designed 3D beat-em-up, so this wasn't an issue for me.

Both Sega and Platinum Games were involved with the hiring of the voice cast, and both were directly involved with the translation and development of the script (originally penned by Yasumi Matsuno). Sega obviously had some pull, given that it published the game and all, yes, but all of the content in the final product runs right along with Platinum's original intentions, so I fail to see the issue there.

I don't know about the rest of the cast, but the commentators are Greg Proops (Whose Line) and John DiMaggio (Futurama), so probably outside of the regular voice talent pool. I'm not surprised they're the highlight here.
