Sonic and the Black Knight shark-jumping art contest

Post by Segaholic2 »

Sega is holding an official contest for fans to submit fan art to be included in their upcoming travesty "Sonic and the Black Knight." I think it would be funny if we could actually get a piece of art featuring Sonic literally jumping a shark into the game, so this local GHZ contest aims to do just that. Draw up any piece of art in any style of your choosing that fits both the specifications of the official Sega contest (U.S. link found here), plus have Sonic jump a shark.

You have until September 19 to post your submissions here at The GHZ and also into the official Sega contest (U.S. submissions can be e-mailed through this page). There will be a GHZ poll to pick our local winners, and if any of our entries here actually makes it into the final game, there will be another prize for that individual or individuals. Prizes will consist of copies of "Sonic and the Black Knight" and maybe some other shit. Who knows. Get drawing.

The GHZ contest is open to all registered members of The GHZ forums. To enter into the official Sega contest, check their contest page for your region. Blah blah blah legal bullshit here.

Hey Sonic fans! We are looking for artists to help us tell the story of Sonic in a special animated gallery in the upcoming new title, Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii, spring 2009).

Draw Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, Shadow, Blaze and other characters (or any combination of one or more of them together) in your favorite scene from your favorite Sonic game and send it to us before the deadline of September 19th. We’ll choose 20 of the best to feature and each of those winners will also receive a free copy of Sonic and the Black Knight

Before you get busy with the paint, here are a few of the RULES:

# YOUR MASTERPIECE: All the work submitted must be original and created by you. Art can be hand drawn or created digitally. Please keep the dimensions of your art to 11 inches x 8.5 inches. For hand drawn submissions color drawings on plain paper are best.

# SENDING IT: Art can be sent electronically or by mail. If you're sending your art by mail, please be sure to include your name, address, age, telephone number and e-mail address. (See terms and conditions for mailing address) If you're submitting via this website, just click the link below and follow the instructions. Please send us jpg or png files and keep them below 1mb in size.

# YOU, THE ARTIST: You must be over 13 years old to enter and live in either the United States or Canada.

# DUE DATE: All entries must be received by September 19th. (Mailed entries must be postmarked by September 12th.)

I have an idea that would never in a million years be chosen as a winner by SEGA, but would be hilarious. Should I do it?

If you have something else that you think might win… well, you should probably do that. I guess. ;) But you should do the hilarious thing, too, or at least describe it. :P

I don't think I've ever scanned anything hand-drawn, and I've been doodling Sonic in my notebooks since 2nd grade. But this contest is killer.

Can the shark be hidden in the background? If I could draw I might try the snowboarding section of Icecap with Sonic jumping over an ice sculpture of a shark, or the Sonic vs Shadow battle with a chunk of debris shaped like a shark somewhere beneath them, or something like that.

Be as creative as you want, however subtle or blatant that ends up being.

As you can see, I chose for a more subtle approach..

I had thought about including Cream, Chris, Blaze, Marine, Elise Jet and gun-toting Shadow in the picture, but I got lazy. might revise it later. Is that against the rules?

Part of me almost wishes we could syphon all the bad parts out of today's Sonic games, resulting in a game that looks like that picture, while the rest of the Sonic games released thereafter become good ones.

Wouldn't that be somewhat frustrating? To have potentially good games raped by crappy controls, camera and rushed design? At least the way it is, we can balk at the games on the whole. I mean, when Shadow sucked, it was no great loss. Like I want to the urge to replay a game about an alien android hedgehog clone with a gun and an attitude problem.

I didn't mean go back and remove the bad parts from the already-existing games, I mean drain out all the badness that the series is currently infected with, thus causing any future games to be good.

The joke was that the aforementioned "badness" was an essence so strong that it took on a form of it's own, which would probably be a game based on the picture I was referring to. Sorta like Super Sonic from the Fleetway comics.

I hope I never have to do an explanation like that again...

Yeah. I got that, what I'm saying is that the problems run deeper than stupid premises, it's the broken gameplay that's killing them. I use Shadow as an example, because if there's a Sonic game that's broken, awful, unplayable and an embarrassment, isn't it more painful if it was a triumphant return to form creatively than if it's a black hedgehog shooting things?

I'm pretty sure he intended for those things to be siphoned off along with the gimmicky premises and accesories etc.

Hmm, in light of that, maybe cjmcray should rework that picture to have Sonic falling through the floor, and/or a stupid camera angle.
