Awaiting your orders, miss Jade

Beyond Good & Evil 2 might finally be happening. Eventually. Maybe. Info is scattered at this point, but here is what's been translated/reported (that I can find) from a interview JeuxVideo magazine did with him:
  • It's been in preproduction for year or so, with only 10-12 people actively working at it
  • The apparent holdup, not too suprisingly if true, is Ubisoft. Specifically Ancel's bosses who haven't yet officially greenlit it, so it must be something they're messing with in their spare time. Mega Man 2 anyone?
  • If the project is a go, it will be for 360/PS3 at least (according to Kotaku)
  • Says Gamespot, he dropped this extra hint: "We want to be in continuity with the first game, with a big variety of levels, lots of emotion in the gameplay, and characters we care about. This time we are dealing with planet Hillys' future, and the relationship with animals...."
And here is a blurb about the interview from JeuxVideo's site.

I don't know that it needs a sequel; the original could've stood on its' own for years more even with the cliffhanger - but it's Ancel, and if he's working with the same team, especially the same composer, it's looking good already. If they do us just one favor, all I can ask is keep the damn thing in bug testing longer. And/or give the louses who are supposed to report glitches (game breaking ones at that) a raise.

Wasn't the original meant to be the first part in a trilogy anyway?

Also, semicolons are for prudes.

It is, but I get the feeling that they tried not to leave a ton of loose ends taunting people in case a sequel wasn't gonna happen for any reason.

Have you finished it yet, actually?

No, but if a sequel is ever officially announced I'll fish it out the closet and play through again, hopefully all the way this time unless there are any other save-eating bugs I don't know about.

I completely glossed this game over when it came out 'cause I thought it was a different kind of game entirely. x_X I did end up playing it eventually, though, and a sequel would please me muchly. :)

I really hope this gets green lit and comes out. The word of mouth concerning the first one way after release should guarantee a sequel selling very well.

I don't remember any bugs except I know on some platforms there was a very important keycard a robot was supposed to drop that sometimes didn't happen, causing people to start over.

But it played flawless for me. I played it on Xbox, by the way.

It's in the second to last dungeon, I think. There's one point where that dude you're travelling with is supposed to appear, but sometimes the game bugs out and he doesn't. You need him for a puzzle later on, but if you save your game after the trigger point, he still won't be around even after you load. Which basically makes the dungeon impossible to finish, as I discovered to some frustration.

There are other bugs, I assume, but that was the one that got me.

The lost partner glitch. Way I hear it, this could potentially happen anywhere in the game. It got me in the last 30 minutes, but I lucked out and saved in a seperate slot a few disc stations back.

I have it on PS2, and in addition to that and a choppy framerate, music and sound effects start skipping occasionally (read: often). Ye gods.

The only bug I encountered was at some point or other I fell through the floor and into vast, black, infinite nothingness. Needless to say, I had to restart from my last save. :P

I think it says a lot for the game that there were notable bugs in it, but it still has such a high reputation. Mine was annoying, but it certainly didn't sour the game for me.

That sounds oddly familiar.

Dig it out of the tomb and get cracking, Gibbon. (trailer might stop dead at 1:45 as I write this)

For just one teaser scene, looks eerily gritty. Did Pey'j have that scar already?

Please don't be Beyond Good & Evil: The Darkness Within, please don't be Beyond Good & Evil: The Darkness Within, please don't be Beyond Good & Evil: The Darkness Within

Besides that, it also stopped loading at 1:45 for me. Realistic Pey'j makes me feel tingly inside. I'm pretty sure he always had that scar over his right eye.

I loved BG&E until one of the last levels apparently demanded an item I had forgotten to pick up at an earlier stage. I haven't touched it since.

Still, Im excited by this announcement! Maybe I should dust off my ps2 copy and give it another shot.

He did have the scar, yes! It's a very faithful recreation of Pey'j in general. He's grimier, and his skin is more detailed and pig-like, but his face and body proportions are all totally spot on.

I am so pleased! It's really nice to see him at the forefront of the first teaser too, considering the "fat talking pig" was one of the less... er... marketable elements of the original.

It finally started working. I tried not to guffaw in public at what ol' fat one did there. More realistic-looking or not, definitely has the spirit of the first one.

Gawker Media's video codec is a shitstain for sure though, I tried to watch this and even on this blazing fast wifi i'm using, it couldn't run more than 3 seconds at a time.

Which item? (Put it in spoiler tags)

In my country, we have a word for this:

YEE-HAW!

This is outstanding, this is the best news I've heard in... this year, I think. Teaser looks awesome, I can't wait to see Jade!

Ancel's doing it, right? Right? Ancel?

The rumour floating around for the last year or so is that Ubisoft green-lit preproduction of this game specifically to appease Ancel after Rayman 4 (which he was going to be directing) was repurposed into a Wii party game.

Wait, so he didn't direct that Rayman rabbits thing? I never played it because, well, party games are the most tragic waste of dimensional space that I can think of, but I was under the impression that turning Rayman 4 into such a thing was his idea.

Anyway, does Ubisoft even value Ancel that much? I doubt it. I can't think of any logical reason why they'd greenlight Beyond 2, though. Should I delete all my porn and devote my life to the god that obviously must exist?

He didn't direct it, no. Back when it was still a platformer he was doing a ton of press work and interviews for it, too. But as soon as they announced it was a party game, he rather conspicuously disappeared. And as I recall, in the final game he's only credited for his work designing the Rabbids.

The rumour was that the change was forced on him, and he was so pissed that he quit the project and threatened to leave the company altogether. Ubisoft wanted to keep him -- he is kind of their token prestigious auteur -- and BGandE 2 was a project that they had been waffling about for a couple years. So they finally greenlit preproduction to appease him.

I can't really verify that story, other than that I've heard similar sounding tales from a couple different unrelated people vaguely connected to the industry. But it is at least true that his disappearance from Raving Rabbids' development was sudden and total. And, well... they were also right about there being a BGandE 2 in the first place. So you never know!

I'm instigating a new rule: no complaining about a game that's on a console you don't own. I'm very sorry that your mother won't let you put a $400 charge on her credit card- no, actually, I don't care. Nobody does. Go start a recess support group on the playground.
