Classic Anime

Post by Mep »

Reading past topics, I've heard Gibbon and others talking about anime and how ts not what it used to be, digital art ruined it and stuffs like that. Well since I am going to open up my own animation studio(its one of the things I plan to do after I win the lottery), I'd like to know what anime you people were interested in way back then and stuff. Just list a few titles and ill look it up on Veoh or something, it may even come down to the last un-seeded torrent. I don't know. I just don't want to be classified as what Gibbon describes as a "manga-reading tweeny" to myself. At least, thats not who I want to appeal to when I release my masterpiece...

For a serious answer, I really don't think digital art is ruining anime or animation in general, because digital art is just another means of animating. We can't be clinging onto the old ways all the time unless the old ways offer some advantage that can't be done digitally. GG! is just an old fogey in that respect.

As for the manga-reading tweeny, it depends on your audience. I think what he meant by manga reading tweeny is don't use a generic anime style when another style suits it; I believe he mentioned "manga-reading tweeny" when it came to Steambot Chronicle's cover, and I agree, the boxart is ugly and has poor composition, not because it's poorly drawn, but because it looked like 90% of manga titles that you could pull off the manga shelf of Barnes & Noble. There's nothing that made it stand out anymore, probably because the localization thought the original art to be too different.

As for manga/anime I like, it's definitely Yu-Gi-Oh.

Ah yes. You are going to open your own animation studio after you win the lottery. Which you have plans for. Just like you have plans for being struck multiple times by lightning, yes?

I'm completely confident that any and every anime that includes the following items are absolute masterpieces: moe girls, random unfunny/ supposedly psychological bullshit, girls in swimsuits, weird mythological monsters, girls in school outfits, gigantic humanoid battle robots, girls in panties, some powerful-yet-lusty old fart, girls in aprons, overly strong and empty-headed warriors that simply WON'T GIVE UP!!, catgirls and sum nekkid boobies. Oh, and girls dressed like ninjas. Video game adaptions are fine too.
One example of such greatness in imported cartoon form is Lucky Star. Totally KAWAII ^_^' !!

Please avoid crap like, say; Akira, Tenshi no Tamago, Macross Plus, Tenkuu no Escaflowne, Waga Seishun no Arcadia, Spriggan, Onkyo Seimeitai Noiseman, Cowboy Bebop, Koukaku Kidoutai, Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor, Dirty Pair, Space Cobra, Harlock Saga ~Nibelung no Yubiwa~, Devilman and so.

Just last week, me a couple of buddies of mine had a marathon Evangelion session. We watched the entire series in one day. We have plans to eventually watch the movies back to back too.

I recently got into the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya which I guess would fall under girls in school outfits. I really enjoy Yu Yu Hakusho, mainly for the characters.

Most anime, like most cartoons in general, is generic and cliched. That was just as true twenty or thirty years ago as it is today! But in the 80s, its unpopularity in North America acted like a quality filter... only a handful of titles made it over here at all, so the ones that did were generally the best available. (And the ones most likely to please the art house cinema nerds that comprised anime's entire American audience at the time.)

Today, every kid in American watches anime and more boys read Naruto comics than Spider-man. It ain't a niche market anymore, which means everything gets exported here pretty much indiscriminately. Now we really have to take the good with the bad. And there is a lot more bad than good.

May as well apply to everything else under the Sun.

And I thought everyone here already watched FuriKuri. I'm ashamed of you, ignorants of Mabase.

See, that's the obvious plan, but then what happens when you get all sunburned and tired of looking at palm trees? When I win the lottery, I'm going to build a flying castle. Then I can travel all over the world. If I win the lottery a second time, I'm going to equip it with a rocket engine so I can fly into space and explore other planets.

I was under the impression that digital art is easier and cheaper to produce than more traditional means. It's not too hard to make a connection between this fact and what seems to be an increase in lesser-quality Western programs. I don't know if we'll ever see anything so visually exciting as Batman the Animated Series or Samurai Jack again, although one might use Foster's as a counter-argument.

Anyway, if this is the case in the west, I'd expect it to be the same for anime. Seems like the anime of a decade or two ago had to bother to find a visual niche that looked good in order to impress and capture the audience, whereas nowadays any low-budget studio can produce art that would've made the Cowboy Bebop folks cry a few years ago. The problem is that when this low-budget studio can make something that looks so good, it's not going to bother finding a unique style, and usually won't bother to rise above thematic cliches. So digital art might be detrimental to the art of anime since it speeds the production of low-quality shows. In conclusion, every anime that is not as good as FLCL should be erased from human record.

Oh yeah, the new digital technologies allow for some crappier animation, but sometimes it'll enhance the quality of the resultant picture with richer detail. This is most evident when comparing the first and last episodes of a long-running series like One Piece.
Also, it allows for some visually sweet, stylish productions like Gankutsuou, though I really miss more traditional animation procedures like those of Bluth's Secret of N.I.M.H. from time to time.

And I like when they use the trap cards. Cool shit.
