Your favorite game(s)

Post by Ritz »

I've found the GHZ's collective taste in games to be infallible thus far, and I'm rather bored at the moment, so I just figured I'd get the straight dope from you hepcats instead of waiting for you all to drop names every odd occasion. Of course, the older and more obscure the game, the better.

Anyway, after much careful consideration, I'd have to say Silhouette Mirage is my current favorite. I'm certain GG! wrote a review for it a while back, but I can't seem to find his post, and I don't have the energy to type out a proper review right now. Zeta's laid out the gist of it here, though. It's every bit as sensual as he claims.

Damnation man, you have to narrow it down. Any particular genre or time frame or... anything?

Definitely check out Racket Boy's retro gaming pages - in particular his "Best Undiscovered [console] Games" and "Cheapest [console] Games Worth Your Time" articles.

Other famous Treasure games that you probably already knew about: Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and Guardian Heroes.

(Disclaimer: I've never actually played any of those, but I want to! Here's hoping for Ikaruga on XBLA and Saturn games for the Wii VC.)

Treasure have decided to support the 360 and, as far as I know, are working on a new shooter for it.

I've played Guardian Heroes. It's good fun but gets way too hard way too fast... personally. Of course, this probably stems from the RPG aspect of the whole thing - i.e., I'm not levelling up fast enough, and definitely not adding to the correct attributes with the bonus points they give you. This should NOT affect multiplayer mode, where, whilst there are some bloody cheap characters to mess things up with, you generally have complete control over every aspect of the fight. Plus it's the only game I know of that has the possibility of six-way bunny fights.

So, favorite games... in no particular order (seriously): Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage 2, Sonic CD, Super Mario World, Skies of Arcadia, Daytona USA, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (as part of the Street Fighter Collection on the Saturn), Day of the Tentacle, DOOM (try Skulltag for online play), Quake (the first one), Unreal Tournament 2004, Trackmania Sunrise (which Trackmania United kinda made redundant, IIRC, but buyer beware for either: they use StarForce), Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (the first more than Justice for All, but both are good), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Sonic Robo Blast 2 (fine, so it's a fangame, but it's a well-made one so there), Worms 2, pretty much any Bomberman game (barring Act Zero and any spin-offs), either Clockwork Knight (man, I need to replay those), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, TLoZ: Link's Awakening DX, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Earthworm Jim, Earthworm Jim 2, Return of The Incredible Machine: Contraptions, The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions (heck, just The Incredible Machine in general), Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Clubhouse Games (seriously, some DS cardgames now and then are a great time-waster, particularly Capitalism - or, as the game calls it, "President"), Psychonauts, Marble Blast, The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain, The Time Warp of Dr. Brain, Dr. Brain: Action Reaction (different Dr. Brain than the last two, but the game's good enough anyway to warrant a look - not many first-person puzzlers out there), Puyo Puyo, Mega Man 2, Mega Man 8, Mega Man X, Mega Man X4, Mega Man Legends (didn't get too far into Legends 2 before it started freezing on me, so no comment there), either Metroid Prime, Super Metroid...

Maybe some of that would pique your interest a little.

There was a sequel on the PS2 but I never played that one. It's from Irem, so I assume it's clunky charming awesome like everything else they do.

Anything was sort of what I had in mind, here. Just name the game you'd consider your favorite, or if that's too difficult, name a handful of games you're fond of, or the last game you found amusing. It's all the same to me, really.

Panzer Dragoon Saga. More later, but PDS is so good it warrants immediate posting whenever a topic like this comes up.

Oh, uh... Shenmue, then.

I like Willy Wombat, but it's not really that good.

Batman 1 on the Game Boy is pretty cool.

S-Strider, maybe? Beauty and the Beast on Intellivision?

I wanted to say it but, sadly, I've barely scratched its surface. Which is saying something, since it's only about 20 hours long (IIRC). What little I have scratched was on an emulator that wasn't running the game at full speed.

But hey, I have a tax return right here, and my Saturn's still kickin'. I'll just go on eBay, buy it, play it, resell it, and none would be the wiser. :P

Oh yeah, here's a small list I came up with a while ago, in order of greatest to least:

1. Silhouette Mirage (PSX)
2. Metal Slug 3 (Arcade)
3. Alien Soldier (MD)
4. Twinkle Star Sprites (Arcade)
5. Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
6. Dynamite Headdy (MD)
7. Panorama Cotton (MD)
8. Sonic 3 & Knuckles (MD)
9. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos (Sentimental reasons, mostly) (PSX)
10. Clockwork Knight (2, namely, but they're both practically the same game) (Saturn)

Keio Flying Squadron 2, Einhander and the Sparkster games deserve an honorable mention as well

The only real question here is if you will be willing to part with it after beating it. The story is ridiculously compelling, and I guarantee you'll miss about good deal of the important stuff (story and item/otherwise) the first time around unless you use a guide. A lot of the fun comes from finding new stuff and connections to other titles in the series in subsequent playthroughs, especially if you've played through the other games. I've played the thing nigh on seven or eight times now and I still love it. Perhaps Popcorn will chime in at some point with his love for the series. I recall him being somewhat warm to it.

My favorite recent game has got to be RE4. After I’ve beaten it, I’ll stop playing for a month or two, then pick it up again and get completely hooked for the next few days. I also swear by Ōkami. Its visuals impress and amaze no matter how many times I turn on the console. The same can be said for Flow, which I recently got to try on the PS3, and I’ll be damned if it’s not fun. I just wish I’d got to spend more time with it.

The only games I thoroughly enjoyed on the PSX were the two Oddworld games and MGS. Mega Man Legends deserves special mention, too. I love almost every Dreamcast title I own, but SA2 is my favorite game of all time (probably thanks in part to nostalgia). I also love the original Spider-Man on DC and PSX and have come to appreciate it even more since the lackluster adaptations of the movies.

As for obscure games, Magi-Nation on the GBC was gold. Great story, beautiful visuals, fun combat, imaginative fantasy, and actual humor make up for the slightly stagnant collection of Dream Creatures available for capture and use. Wario Land, Link's Awakening, and Kirby’s Dream Land 2 are probably my favorite Game Boy games.

Yeah, I did notice the logs that I was collecting upon my second time attempting to play the game (this time on a newer and faster computer, as well as on SSF instead of GiriGiri), which I hadn't the first time. Christ, that's some in-depth stuff. Not many games can claim to have THAT much to them.

But then, I haven't really ever gotten farther than meeting Gash and proclaiming my plan to go to the desert, which all happens within about an hour of starting, so.

Either way, I have this faint desire to play Skies now. I know it's not Panzer Dragoon Saga, but admit it, the dragon flight and airship flight of each game control pretty much the same way, and both universes are pretty damned unique.

He sorta resembles Space Moose.

I don't feel like recalling all of my favorite titles I've played for the past 18 years, so I'm just going to name the first two titlesI could think of that I really adore and keep coming for more. They would be Earthbound and any version of Panel de Pon.

Skies really smacks of Panzer Dragoon in a lot of subtle ways. Both do a great job of creating atmospheres that permeate the worlds they take place in, and Skies borrows here and there very proficiently from Saga in that regard. Admittedly it's a hell of a lot cheerier, but subtle things like the layout of PDS's Zoah when compared to the first city you go to in Skies' Nasr and some of the enemies (especially the Silvite design) definitely recall Saga (and the rest of the Panzer series') pure-types. Of course, these comparisons make no sense to anyone that hasn't gotten further into Saga than the desert sequence.

It sounds like you're stopping right before the game really begins to take off gameplay and story-wise. Stick with it through the desert and you'll be treated to a really involving change to the battle system and some pretty good twists. It rarely slows down after that. As for SSF, I've played a good deal of PDS on it and only ever experienced any slowdown in the one area where you have to shut off the fans to leave the valley early on. But I've been running it on a Macbook Pro, so.

To anyone else that has played the Panzer series: Did the enemy designs in Orta seem to not quite mesh with the established Panzer universe, or is it just me? A lot of them just sort of.. bugged me.

Yeah, I wouldn't doubt that I am. First time was because the emulator flat-out froze there, but the second time, my framerate was suddenly lower than it was when I was playing it earlier, and I couldn't fathom why. Comparing it to YouTube videos... just makes me want to play it on the actual console, really. :P

I know at least CP was very adamant about the game, too.

S-Strider, maybe?
I never figured you for a Strider-liker! I thought it was sort of charming in an 80s capcom arcade game sort of way but really it's not very fun. I would like to play more games with that many bikini-clad amazon hotties in it (a major failing point of the sequel. Actually weren't there exploding penguins or something in that one? It's really not the same thing).
To anyone else that has played the Panzer series: Did the enemy designs in Orta seem to not quite mesh with the established Panzer universe, or is it just me? A lot of them just sort of.. bugged me.
I felt like Orta didn't really fit with the other games very well at all, like it was trying too hard and just missing the mark. Like that bone-boss you fight in the desert, it was so clearly trying to be the forest boss from Zwei, but the impact of that (and other encounters from Zwei) just really weren't there. For all the improved graphics, Orta just doesn't feel as well-directed or designed as Zwei or Saga.

Anyway, a few somewhat older ones I might throw in here that haven't been mentioned yet..(?)

Shinobi 3 (MD)
Ranger-X (MD)
Pulseman (MD)
Ristar (MD)
Kirby Super Star (SNES)
Sin and Punishment (N64)
Jumping Flash! 2 (PSX)
Ghost in the Shell (PSX)
SkullMonkeys (PSX)
WarioLand Advance (GBA)
Dynamite Cop (DC)

My favorite games on the more recent-ish hardware in no particular order..

Gradius 5
Metal Gear Solid 2
Katamari Damacy
Space Chanel 5 p.2
P.N.03
Pikmin
F-Zero GX
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Outrun 2
Mario Kart DS

Also, there's this game called Sky Puppy...

I've got a few. Ill give you one obscure for each system.

Arcade: Osman (if you like Strider, this is for you)
NES: Yo!-Noid (I'll tell you, this is a lot better than Pepsiman)
Master System: Ghostbusters (damn stairs)
Mega Drive: King's Bounty (fuck Heroes of Might and Magic)
SNES: Tiny Toons Adventures (yeah, you know it)
PSX: Crisis Beat (amazing Streets of Rage action, and it's funnier in jap, because you can make up your own dialogue!)
Saturn: (I never had a Saturn but i'd say Die Hard Arcade, just for the heck of it)
N64: Conker's Bad Fur Day (it refers to Clockwork Orange, must play it)
DC: Ecco the Dolphin (Ecco gets an armor in this one)
PS2: The Warriors (Streets of Rage + GTA + 79s movie = PURE GOLD) or maybe Altered Beast, I had a lot of fun with it.
X-Box: (I don't have one of these fancy boxes, but I'd say Toe Jam & Earl 3)
GameCube: (Nope. Don't have it either. No clue whatsoever. Smash Bros maybe?)
X-Box 360: Rumble Roses XX (what else? oh yeah, Dead Rising)
PC: Heart of Darkness (now this is an excelent game)

I've been playing some games recently, some are pretty good:

Scarface (PS2)
Guitar Hero 1 & 2 (PS2)
Viewtiful Joe (PS2)
Ecco the Dolphin (DC)
Space Channel 5 part 2 (DC)
Sam & Max Season 1 (PC)
Heart of Darkness (PC)
Castlevania 3 (NES)
Wonder Boy in Monster Land (SMS)
TMNT (GBA)
Streets of Rage Remake (PC, fangame, yeah)

But I'll never get sick of Alex Kidd.

At the top of my head, my current favorites: Yoshi's Island, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Jak II, Crash 2, Crash Team Racing, Okami, FF9, Skies of Arcadia, Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong Country 2, Guardian's Crusade (or the more cuter title: Knight and Baby)--just to name a few.

Since you're asking for favourite, as opposed to best, here are mine in no particular order:

NiGHTS into Dreams...
Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams...

Bubble Bobble
Bubble Symphony (criminally overlooked, best game in the franchise)

Puzzle Bobble 2

Donkey Kong Jr
Donkey Kong (Game Boy, with 101 levels)
Mario vs Donkey Kong (not quite as good as the GB Donkey Kong)

Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario World

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Yoshi's Island

Wario Land II

Super Mario Kart

Tetris DX (you can pause, switch off the power and then resume later, awesome)

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic CD
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Jam (special mention because it was such a well put together compilation)

Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
Panzer Dragoon Saga

Super Street Fighter II Turbo

Streets of Rage II

Sega Rally

Baku Baku Animal

Worms

Saturn Bomberman

Shenmue

Metal Slug

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Pokemon Red/Green
Pokemon Gold/Silver

Chu Chu Rocket!

Game & Watch Gallery
Game & Watch Gallery 2
Game & Watch Gallery 3
Game & Watch Gallery 4

Ms Pac-Man

Ultimate Spider-Man (just for swinging around the city)

I want to say Zombies Ate My Neighbours because I have very fond memories of playing it on SNES back in the day, but I played it recently and it wasn't nearly as good as I remember. Maybe it's just because I only gave it a few minutes on an emulator. Or maybe it just sucks.
