So a few months ago I was reading some 3d modeler prick's happy lauding of Sonic and the Secret rings ( this person I may add a little while earlier was saying that sonic is so much a part of him that if it continued to be bad he would commit suicide) and someone said it would be neat if hyper sonic was brought back, the modeler prick (who is rather good at 3d stuff) Haughtily replied that Hyper sonic and the super emeralds are in no way cannon, that they are only a semi cheap easter egg, and from what I could tell once I joined the fray that Sonic 3 and Knuckles is not really a complete story broke into two parts but just another cheap eater egg to make people happy. Is the prick right? I disagreed rather vehemently but my knowledge of sonic-dom was not good enough as to give a good case.

I'd have to agree. I don't consider Hyper forms, or the Super Emeralds canon at all.

Sonic Team has'nt said either way though.

It's a widely-known fact that Sonic 3 and Knuckles were originally intended to be one game, but were split in two due to time crunch and other issues (selling twice the number of games was probably appealing). This explains why the two games were released within a year of each other.

You can find evidence for this in Sonic 3's sound test.

As far as the Emeralds and "canon," I'll leave that up to someone with more nerd knowledge than I. Frankly, I don't give a shit about that.

Who knows what the canon is, given that the stories of the 16-bit games are almost certainly afterthoughts. The Super Emeralds do appear in Sonic Adventure, sort of. There's the tiny versions of the emeralds that you collect, but in the presence of the Master Emerald they're really big.

14 emeralds were shown in a Japanese ad for Sonic Adventure for some reason. There's a shot of it here.

It's at least ambiguous canon, but I think the fact that the Super Emeralds are clearly there as an added gameplay incentive for playing through a longer game and have pretty much never been referenced again points to them being, well, a gameplay incentive. I'd say they're about as canon as the gumball/slot machine bonus stages.

Seconded.

I think Hyper Knuckles/Hyper Tails/Hyper Sonic were just there for easter egg / gameplay elements, and had no real connection to story. Hyper Sonic was basically just a rainbow Super Sonic and had as big of a part in the storyline as "Ashura" had in Sonic 2. Super Sonic is Sonic's only transformation in my eyes. (And I guess Darkspine)

I have my own personal theory that only Sonic can transform using the Emeralds power (hence the painting in Sonic3&K) and that's why Knuckles/Tails were just in little glowing balls in Heroes. Shadow could do it as well, becuase Gerald programmed him to be able to. Dunno about Silver though..

Has Shadow turned super at all since Sonic Adventure 2?

It amazes me how it never occurs to those debating the notion of Sonic "canon" that they spend more time contemplating the Sonic story in one of these topics than the creators ever did.

Seriously.

I'm assuming that's rhetorical but I'll bite anyway: Shadow and 2K6. Which makes it three times too many; Super should be Sonic's schtick.

Oh. Silver doesn't do it, then?

The Emerald-shooting Cannon (エメラルド発射カノン砲) was only indirectly referred to as such in the Sonic Y anime which is not totally canon because it only uses certain official materials from the pre-Kumono era Sega of Estonia fact sheet. We should take that with a grain of salt.

That picture is actually of Eggman's butt plug, which is why it's covered in poo. That's definitely canon.

Silver does it too. All three hedgehogs do, at once. It's Super overkill, that's what it is.

Thankfully, no, it's just the three main hedgehogs.

It never really occured to me that the other super's wouldn't be considered canon..Obviously if the story was constructed more thoroughly I wouldn't be surprised that they fit them all in somehow.

I'd definitly place Super Knuckles into the canon however. Maybe it's the "art" of him in the completed save file that makes me think that, which is stupid as is. But besides that I can't say for sure.

Archie. That's what's going on.

What about all that story about how the emeralds changed from their, ahem, former emerald shapes to the diamond shape we have today during Sonic3K?

I'd say the Super Emeralds are today's Chaos Emeralds, which makes them canon, because the emeralds were always canon anyway.

So is this:

MMmm Hmm, I always thought the super emeralds were supposed to be canon because if you collected them the ending for Hyper Sonic was slightly different than super, but I haven't finished SK&3 with just super sonic in a while so I am not sure.

Now there is some high class writing, along with the use of the word "cannon" it must mean that I am a frickin' master of the English language!

Yeah, I thought that was the obvious intent of the hidden palace scene.

Kudos to smile for having an article to reference:

Further evidence is that Super Sonic couldn't breathe under water but Hyper Sonic could. In SA2 Super Sonic and Shadow can breathe in space, which could suggest that the they've been going hyper since S3&K and the designers just kept the golden color and the names Chaos Emerald and Super Sonic. Of course, there's a lot of space levels in SA2 and nobody seems to have breathing problems.

I should probably try that game out, as I recall it wasn't supposed to be all that bad.
