Kurenai

Post by Green Gibbon! »

I realize it's kind of a long shot... the only good Tenchu game was the first one, and From Software have an astoundingly mediocre history. But still, I would say that Tenchu Kurenai is looking nice.

For the first time ever, the graphics don't look like the winning project in an origami class. Plus, while most of the footage that's been released is cutscene, the animation, at least, is much smoother. If they can smooth out the actual in-game animation and control so it doesn't look and feel like you're playing Lego ninja, even if that's the only major improvement in the whole game, it will be the saving grace I've been praying for since Tenchu 1.

Plus, Ayame is now super hot.

From Software is often misleading like this, though. Their games are absolutely beautiful, especially when dealing with traditional Japanese imagery and mythology, which seems to be their forte, but despite the eye candy they always end up sucking.

But it's Tenchu, I still consider the original the best ninja game ever made, and this might be the first significant improvement the series has ever had. So all I'm saying is, wouldn't it be great if Tenchu Kurenai turned out to be as cool as it looks, even though I know it won't?

Wait. From Software... aren't these the guys responsible for the Echo Night series?

I also know they were behind Kuon, but that looks all too much like a Fatal Frame ripoff from the outset.

Yeah. They also did the Armored Core games, Lost Kingdom 1 and 2, Evergrace, Otogi, etc. There isn't an especially good game in their entire repertoire.

Thought I'd heard of them.

In its defense, the first Echo Night isn't half bad - sure, controls are a bit clunky, puzzles are typically frustrating as hell (but with solutions obvious enough to make it painful) and the voice acting blows. But it's something different as far as horror games go, and the story ain't bad (not something I can say for some of their other titles, but eh).

Armored Core was good...

...and then the sequels killed it.

Don't forget Murakumo.

I never liked the original Armored Core. Recently I picked up one of the newer ones, thinking that I might have decided to warm up to it, or something, but it still felt as dull (yet maddeningly difficult) and un-fun as before.

I dunno. I've heard some really good things about Otogi, and the concept certainly piques my interest (hey, let's vaniquish demons and obliterate the landscape at the <i>same time!</i>)

Someone better post a picture of Ayame.

Otogi sucks. It's like a hugely devolved Ninja Gaiden, and it's really, really, really boring and repetitive.

That's not the new Ayame, that's the hideous Tenchu 2 Ayame.

This it?
I think that's also from Tenchu 2, but she's in her outfit from Tenchu 1. Plus, she's looking a bit chunky, there.

The one wingsband reposted is the new one (with apologizes to Tenchu.de for wasting their bandwidth:

She looks like a grape-flavored ninja lollipop...

What the hell! Did PlasticWingsBand edit his post? It looked like you had just said that wasn't the new one, which confused me, because she was lookin' pretty hot after all.

another Tenchu game eh? I only played the first one, it was pretty good, though the cheesy dialogues and acting made me laugh more then I should.

My first clue was the phrase: "Last edited by plasticwingsband on Thu Jul 08, 2004 3:09 am; edited 1 time in total"

The acting in the US version was some of the worst ever. I like to think the original Japanese dialogue was better. There's actually a cheat to use the original dialogue, but I think you have to have beaten the game to activate it.

Either way, the deeper into the game you got, the less realistic it became. I kind of started losing interest around the undead stage, which I think was level 6 or 7.

There's a cheat code for that? Huh...I guess I best check it out in gamefaqs to better confirm it and play the game sometime...

For what it's worth, level 8 is pretty normal. You climb a mountain to get a flower.
