Sonic's Music Genre
Im getting tired of the Rock,Metal and crap In the new sonic games! I say BRING ON THE OLD STUFF! (Sonic Rush had good music but...)
What exactly was the Genre of Music in the old Sonic Games?
The New NEXT GEN Sonic Game should have music like this.
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/view.ph ... 6&sub=1975
Click on the top one called Defcon Zero.
Many Jackasses think that Music is the lesser element of a game, WELL THEY CAN SUCK THE...*ahem* So yeah, theyre wrong as hell. The Music sets the mood, the music makes you DANCE! The Music is THE Element~! If your Game has lame music the whole game will stink, its true. But you guys are wise and knew that already right? Anyway!... Discuss!

Hey, some of the music in the new Sonic games is pretty good.
Like this mighty catchy tune:

I agree with both of you.
The classic music was fantastic; there isn't enough like it nowadays.
The new music, however, has its share of great tunes. Most of the level themes from SA1 and 2 were amazing, with the exception of the rap ones which Knuckles got. And even those had a good tune behind the terrible lyrics. Also, I love the Advance series, especially the music. That might be crossing the line, but I think it's at least as good as the classics, except maybe for Icecap and Lava Reef.

Yea thats because thats one of the best songs in SA2..Dr. Watson wrote:Hey, some of the music in the new Sonic games is pretty good.

Im not saying the new songs suck..Im saying theyre not really what Sonic is all about. The old Sonic Music genre fits like glove, and gives the TRUE Sonic atmosphere! Hard to explain the feeling..but its like a feeling of vastness and longing.
The last Game that atmosphere was felt was in SA1..and a little in SA2.
Music like that one in Newgrounds have that Sonic Spark in them..The Sonic Spirit! The Music is powerfull! Never underestimate the music.

I do admit, the mostly 98% of rock and rap-based in SA2 was an annoying thing, but it mostly stems from me not liking those particular music genres, but there are some tunes from recent Sonic games, even if it's rock and stuff, that are catchy. I do enjoy the diversity as well and it's a reason why I enjoyed both Sonic Adventure and Heroes.
And just for the record, I love the 16-bit music, too.

Remember, character design and music style do go together. For instance, I can barely imagine Uekawa's design for Sonic with the music from the Mega-Drive games. The only reason it fit Ohshima's character design was because it was simplistic, as was the music. But with the advent of Uekawa's futuristic design, we need futuristic music. Obviously, Crush 40's music style doesn't cut it. It just doesn't fit. But with Hideki Naganuma's composition for Sonic Rush, I think Uekawa-style Sonic found its true calling. Music is a key element for atmosphere in games.
Anyone remember Go! Go! Hypergrind? Looking at the graphical style, I'd reckon it would have Jet Set Radio or even Viewtiful Joe's music style for that matter, but instead, we got some THPS-esque Soft Rock. Very unsuitable. Like putting a caveman in a business suit. I believe that's what [3D] Sonic is suffering from, atmosphere-wise. That, and crappy graphics.

Well, what kind of industrial? Do you mean Trent Reznor-esque, atmospheric, depressing etudes, or just soulless dance music?HyperFox wrote:I think the Sonic stages could benefit more more drum n' bass, I also really liked Shadow's theme, they should put more industrial in there too.Baba O'Reily wrote:Ska is a bit of a stretch, but Knuckles could definitely use some Dub.

Man, Sonic games would look good with fucking Johnny Cash, because Sonic 360 is looking GOOD, no music can destroy it's graphics.SegaSonic wrote:Agreed!
However, Try to watch the Next gen videos with the song I posted.
Sonic Games still look good with the old music if its spiced up a notch like the song I posted!

Marilyn Manson\KMFDM style "fuck-you-all" thrash techno.Baba O'Reily wrote:Well, what kind of industrial? While we're on that thought, throw in some Atari Teenage Riot-esque digital hardcore...

YES THEY CAN! Thats the philosophy that has destroyed many games and Anime. Thinking lowly of Music! Horrible!no music can destroy it's graphics.
Music is key, and should be handled with care.
So far we all can agree SA1 was the most balanced new game in Music, and satisfied almost everyone. (not to mention in Gamplay ^^ )
I still say Bring on the Old School Music, revamped ofcourse!

Emphasis on the "revamped", NOT remixed. No crappy techno mixes of the originals (even though I would love that), it needs to be rearranged with better synths and actuall guitars and stuff.
For example let's take Sonic 2 - Casino Night Zone as an example; if the single-player music was revamped I would expect it to be JAZZ, like old school casino jazz. The Multi-player would be contemporary jazz (which is like a fusion of jazz and hip-hop).
I would like my memories of the old Sonics ENHANCED, not ruined, so the only way the old game music would work is the instrumentation was changed, the basic song structure was LEFT ALONE.

yep
(just go to newgrounds a listen to all the Sonic Songs there, The possibilities! Old School Music CAN be enhanced!)
and yes, remixes should not be made unless the levels are recreated.
But good rimixes can be made for example,

(first red button, Greenhill)
*I wanted a remix of Icecap in SA1 so badly!*
