Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus
Anybody else played through it yet? I don't want to spoil anything, but oh man is it awesome. It took me a while to adapt to a grab button seperate of a jump buton ala Ico, but it works great, and pretty much everything about the game is amazing. The weapon changing is pretty much seamless, and what little status bars there are are minimal and detract nothing from the game or the breathtaking landscapes and colossi. In conclusion,
-Awesome
-Gorgeous
-Won't let down your expectations
-Killing colossi is great fun
-The story is great
-Go buy it, dammit. Now.

The literal translation is 'Wander and the Colossus', which mostly just doesn't make sense. 'Wanderer' would've been cool, though.Green Gibbon! wrote:Maybe I'm being anal, but that title just pisses me off. What was wrong with the literal translation of "Wanda and the Colossus"? Other than the fact that "shadow" is an easier word to market?
I've played it and finished it. It's wonderful but, unlike Ico, not an experience without flaws. It's less focused and more repetitive, and the story, whilst similarily minamalistic and beautifully-staged, isn't quite so well-rounded, but it's still the best game I've played in ages and ages.

The main character goes unnamed throughout the story and is referred to in the credits only as 'Wander', which seems to me to be not a lot more than an ambiguous nickname. I'm told that a less literal translation of the title would imply that the protagonist wanders (he is The Wanderer) rather than 'Wander' being his actual name, so to speak.
The use of the word 'Shadow' in the Western title does have some vague thematic relevance in that the game involves Ico-style shadow creatures (that's not a spoiler, don't panic), but it's still fairly naff. Incidentally, the name 'Wanda' never had anything to do with the game and was instead a rather strange approximation of the Japanese title.

Yeah, but you consider great big cocks to be a flawless game.Esrever wrote:My copy should be arriving in the mail on Monday, so I will chime in after that. But if it doesn't even measure up to Ico, I seriously question how much I am going to enjoy it. Ico was definitely not what I would consider a "flawless" game.
Even the guy who made on the game didn't know who "Wanda" was for.

I at first assumed "Wanda" was the dead chick, but whether its "Wander" or "Wanda" doesn't really matter, cause this game kicks copious amounts of ass. I'm only on the third colossus, but so far I'm having a good time with it. I'd put it just a tier below Ico, but it's still better than most of the other new games I've played this season.
And that dead chick makes me want to get into necrophilia.
