How you "met" the hedgehog?
I guess Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) was the first Sonic game almost everybody here played, followed by Sonic 2 and then chronologically. That might explain the omnipresent disbelief in recent Sonic games by most people here. But I got to the semi-conclusion that the order of Sonic games you have contact with influences what you think of them today.
Me, for example:
The first Sonic game I met (and possibly, the first videogame I ever met) was the Mark II Sonic 1, around the early 90's, and I liked it. Consequence- being a Sonic fan and a Nintendo fanboy at the same time for almost 8 years.
The second one was technically 3: Sonic & Knuckles Collection, that reafirmed my love for the series and made Metal Sonic my favorite villain for a few months, in spite of all evidence being against this identity.
And the third one was SA2 Battle. That should explain why I think this one has the best storyline in the series, why I don't care if I only play as Sonic in a quarter of it and why I don't think the shooting/hunting missions are that bad. And I also like Shadow, but that's in another subject. After that came Mega Drive Collection, SADX, Heroes, Gems Collection, and futurally, Shadow.
Anyway, the point is: in what order have you met the Sonic games and how do you think that influenced your toughts about the series?

I agree that your first experience with any series is lasting. Nostalgia is a powerful emotion. The Sonic shows and comics you were exposed to probably had just as big an impact on your view of the series, if not bigger.

And then I discovered emulation and ebay and proceeded to play every remaining Sonic game in existence.

Sonic 2 was the first game I was exposed to while playing my cousin's Sega Genesis (when he wasn't being a jerk), then...
*Sonic 3
*Sonic and Knuckles
*Some Sonic game gear game that I don't remember the title of
*Sonic Spinball
*Sonic 3D Blast
*Sonic Adventure
*Sonic Adventure 2
*Sonic Advance
*Sonic Heroes
How it influenced me...mmmm, with the sole exception of Sonic Adventure, every other 3D Sonic games I played sucked monkey balls.

I also started with Sonic 2. It was the first game I ever played, actually. From there:
Sonic 1
Sonic 3
S&K (I had only ever rented Sonic 3 and S&K from a local store at the time)
Sonic Jam
Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn version)
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
SA2B
SADX
Sonic Mega Collection (Waste of cash, but being the Sonic whore I am, I bought it regardless)
Sonic Heroes
I also own Sonic Advance 1 and 2, but I can't really recall exactly when I had bought them on the timeline.
EDIT: Well, if we're not talking about the games only, I was an avid follower of the cartoons and the comics (For the same reason as Ngangbius, only read it because it had Sonic in it. And at the time, it didn't suck that much) for some time before ever coming into contact with the games.

1.) Sonic the Hedgehog(first encounter through a Genesis rental at Blockbuster in the fall which later became a Chrismas present)
2.) Sonic the Hedgehog 2
3.) Sonic Archie comics(admitably, I was into them at the time simply because it was Sonic-related...no matter how messed-up it seems now)
4.) AoStH/SatAM(ditto)
5.) Sonic Spinball(bleh, first disappointment in a Sonic game that didn't really count since it wasn't a platformer)
6.) Sonic CD(we rented the Sega CD a few times in the past)
7.) Sonic 3(my first real disappointment in the series--it just seemed off...)
8.) Sonic & Knuckles(well this is an improvement with the lock-on technology and all. Too bad my interest in Sonic was waning)
9.) Knuckles Chaotix(rented the 32X--game sucked)
10.) Sonic Adventure(got interested in Sonic again in '99 due to this little gem)
11.) Sonic OAV
12.) Sonic Adventure 2(meh...)
13.) Sonic Advance
14.) Sonic Advance 2(the bosses sucked!)
15.) Sonic X(not as good as the OAV, but I thought it was better than any of the Wester Sonic cartoons)
16.) Sonic Mega Collection(rented)
17.) Sonic Heroes(bleh!)
18.) Sonic Mega Collection +(owned and it's great for my little cousins who adores Sonic)
19.) Sonic Advance 3
Also, I used to think Sonic as cool...until Sonic Heroes ruined that image.

My first encounter with Sonic was in the Disney Advenutres comic! I mean, I'm pretty sure that would have been the first place I saw the character, since I bought the mag every issue and always read the comics first. ;)
The first time I played one of the games was Sonic 2 at a friends house, but by that point I had become overly familiar with the franchise just through the advertising, so it wasn't exactly the kind of sudden impact exposure story that some of us have. I got a Genesis and Sonic 2 myself in September of 93, got Spinball for Christmas and picked up Sonic 1 used sometime shortly thereafter. I always rented each subsequent Genesis Sonic game immediately after release, but my folks generally didn't like to buy me games, so I didn't own any of them until later when I could afford to buy them used by myself.
During a particularly long and rainy summer road trip in 1994, I was reluctantly given a Game Gear set that came packed with Sonic Chaos. After that I gradually started accumulating the other GG games on my own until I had them all. It wasn't hard to do because they were generally so cheap to buy used. I even managed to find a Japanese copy of Sonic Drift at some random used game shop, so I thought I had all the Sonic-related Game Gear games ever released! (If only I had known that Tails Skypatrol existed!)
I never owned a Sega CD, never owned a 32X, and never owned a Saturn. Like I mentioned before, my folks generally didn't like to buy video game things for me, and at this point I was still to young to have the kind of cash I'd need to buy these things myself.
The Dreamcast was the first system I bought with my own money. I picked it up a year after its release, although I did rent it during that advance Blockbuster release in August of 1999 to play Sonic Adventure. Since I bought the DC, I've been experiencing every Sonic-related dealy chronologically as it has been released.
As you can probably tell, I was never nearly as hardcore about this franchise as many of you. I love the character to death, but wow... I only just realized that nearly every Sonic game I own is a used copy.

I first played Sonic the Hedgehog over at a friend's house, but when I eventually bought my own Megadrive it came with Sonic 2. Thanks to my tyrannical brothers however, we were relegated to playing versus mode for the longest time. We didn't even know there were other levels than Emerald Hill, Mystic Cave or Casino Night, until one morning I snuck down early and started playing single player. Of course my brothers were like "omgwtf what's this!!?" ^^
I'm sure S3&K came not long after that. To date it still stands as one of the most epic gaming experiences I've ever had. I'm dying to play Sonic Advance, but I can't immediately find the rom...

Sonic 2 was also my first Sonic game. It also happens to be the first console game I ever played and owned as I recieved a Sega Genesis and assorted games for Christmas in 1993.
Sonic 3 as well as Sonic & Knuckles came later along with Phantasy Star 4 on the following Christmas. To date, I have yet to log more hours on any other Sonic game than Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Still play it actively, though over emulation on the GameCube (my Saturn took a nosedive recently).

If I remember correctly, me and Omni saw one of the arcade versions of Sonic 1 in a bar when we were on holiday (I think it was in Portugal somewhere). Neither of us played it, but we did get the chance to see it in action.
The first Sonic game we actually played was the Megadrive version of Sonic 1 which we recieved as a present with the console less than a year later (I can't remember if it was Christmas or Omni's birthday)

I rented Sonic for the Master System then sold the machine so I could play the better version on the Mega Drive and have never looked back. The only games I don't own are Sonic CD, Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic Shuffle. Oh, and no original copies of any Game Gear games either but that’s possibly not a bad thing.
I've even travelled down to London in my youth so I could have a blast on SegaSonic Arcade.
The best moment I can remember, finishing Sonic 2 for the first time at the age of 8, taking down the final giant robot after 12 hits. I smacked it around 8 times and put my joypad down cheering and whooping to myself only to realise, to my utter amazement and horror the thing still walked.
Shadow, Riders and Sonic 2006 are already in my “to buyâ€￾ list but first up is the Gems Collection when it hits the UK on Friday.

I remember playing Sonic 2 over at a friend's house...and then asking my mom desprately for a Genesis of my own. Sadly never got it till a few years ago after buying a pre-owned one (I'm a bad gamer :( )
Though I did get Sonic CD and eventually Sonic R for the PC
And honestly I was always a Sonic Fanboy taking him over Mario anyday. Especially in the classic Sega/Nintendo Console wars.

my exposure to sonic...here it is, gamewise:
Sonic the Hedgehog (in a demo cart)
Sonic Spinball
Sonic 3D Blast
because of my piss poor memory, i can't tell you the order in which i got these games (except that the demo cart came with the genesis i bought, so that's obviously first). i can tell you that i never finished (i.e got to the end of) these games, even using cheat codes. a little bit of a blow to the ego, i must say.
1. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
2. Sonic Mega Collection
3. Sonic Adventure: DX
4. Sonic Advance 2
5. Sonic Heroes
all of these were for the gamecube and game boy advance. except for the second and fourth game, i've been able to finish/get to the end of these games. i enjoyed playing all of them very much, though SA2B and SH rate the highest.
maybe it's because i have been able to beat the newer games or it's the change in gameplay and graphics. but i've come to like sonic more and more with each newer game.

I think the first time I encountered Sonic was in Sonic 2. Not that that's a bad thing, I seem to have started most of my favorite game series on that magical number 2. However, that's not how I associate him.
The first time I remember thinking to myself "Hey! That's a cool character!" and going all Sonic ga-ga was when I first saw the animated Sonic the Hedgehog. I also remember watching Adventures, but the more serious one was my preference.
'Course, now I can't get Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 3D Blast or Sonic Heroes out of my head. Well, at least one of the 3 is good.
