o_O How would you even play PSO on DS in an intuitive way? Oh wait, Sonic Team. ...right. :P
Then again, PSO on DS Wi-Fi from anywhere sounds awesome.

Today. Well, depending on what wacky time zone you live in.
Also this reminds me that I should play PSO GC more often. After all it was the reason I bought a broadband adapter and a Sammy keyboard controller.

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
So is this a Phantasy Star game that happens to be online or a Phantasy Star Online game crammed onto a DS? The difference is pretty huge for me.

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
Apparently it's the story prequel to PSO ep 1. Gameplay wise, who the fuck knows right now. For what its worth, the level design does look closer to PSU though.

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
I think by calling this Phantasy Star Zero, we can pronounce the original series dead, since it looks like it plays like a PSO game and not like a traditional RPG.

I'll be interested in it if it plays like a one-player RPG and not like a shinny gimped version of an MMO.

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
I translated the Famitsu article and posted it at various fora the other day, so I guess I might as well post it here, too.
* NeoGAF's assumption of this being a new part of the PSO series is a bit off. I guess it can't really be confirmed one way or the other, but all the article says is that ZERO is an entirely new game that "borrows heavily from PSO." No mention at all of a direct connection to PSO (as in a sequel or prequel).
* There will be a single-player story mode.
* The game will support up to four players both online (via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection) and through local area connections.
* Visual chat is basically an in-game version of Pictochat. (In fact, it's actually called "Pictochat" in the screenshots.)
* Your chat options include "chat" for writing out text and "symbol" for drawing pictures. (It's not confirmed, but I assume you'll be able to save a certain number of your drawing as shortcuts. After putting as much time into them as some of the examples show, I'd hope so.)
* Chat can be used in the fields and in lobbies. It appears that lobby actions will also return (notice HUmar dude jumping with his right finger in the air in the city picture).
* Three fields have been named: Glaceas Ravine, Riou Snowfield and Ozett Swamp.
* One boss was revealed, a dragon known as Rayburn.
* New features will be added to the battle system, one of which is a chain system. No details are given, however.
* The bottom screen will display your HP and PP (I assume this works just like TP did in PSO), action pallet (it appears that the R button will swap to a second pallet), map, chat options and your teammates' HP. You can press the start button to access the menu, and there's also your little connection strength indicator for online/wireless play.
* Scheduled to be released in Japan some time this winter.
And with the official site opening today, I have this to offer:
http://phantasystar.sega.jp/pszero/
* The intent of the game's title is to provoke a feeling of "returning to origins."
* There will be three races and 14 classes.
* You will be able to create your own character.
* The game will take place on the planet as well as its moon. (Still no name for either.)
* We have Rappies. (Well, that was a given. But now screenshots confirm it.)
* Dylon City is the name of a new area. (Appears to be a lobby, not a field.)
The site says to expect more information this October.

Pardon the double post, as I can't edit my previous (unless I'm just missing the button). I've got a small correction to make on the game's location. Turns out that it takes place on the Earth and its moon, according to the official site, not just some generic planet and its moon.

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
Wow, just wow...I was psyched about PSU for PSP...but now this one stole the hype from me lol~(not to mention PSP for PSP made the #1 PSP game in Japan. But for DS?? wow! best use of stylus yet! IMO
Earth and the moon? you serious...wow, well it explains the cowboys...but you know, PSO has always had artifacts from Earth.. real bullet type weapons, katanas, parasols ect...
Wow, it seems this game goes waaay back story wise? also notice they rarely have photon weapons, its mostly all steel weapons baby! the big steel sword looks sick, it has the PSO design but in steel instead of photon, nice

Unless you can take your items, weapon and character from the offline mode to play in the online mode, I am so not going to buy this game...

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
Just going to copy-paste the translations I did from this article and posted at other boards.
http://gonintendo.com/?p=57893
Story character names revealed. Red-haired newman chicky is Salisa, described as "a young girl from a forgotten race." (Dun dun dun... newmans... forgotten?) Human dude with massive sword is Kai; he is called a veteran Hunter.
Photon arts confirmed to return. (That explains individual PP gauges as opposed to TP.) Also, one new technique revealed: Alresta. It seems that Resta will heal only the caster, while Alresta will heal in a radius around the caster.
Now don't quote me on this just yet. I'll need a better scan to confirm it, but it looks like in the newman info section, it says they were born on the moon. ... ... >_> The picture gets kind of blurry around this part, so that might be partially off. But, I do see 月で生まれ (the next kanji is too small and blurry to read), which translates as "born on the moon." So uh... yeah.
The BGM will be like PSO where it changes with enemy encounters.
The article has a little section on the story. It's tough to make out some of the details due to the blurriness of the image, but here's what I can see.
A massive war destroys civilization; 200 years pass and humans begin to rebuild Earth. They rebuild their cities, but in the process make new enemies. A group collectively known as "Hunters" band together to fight against said enemy using weapons based on photon energy discovered from the ancient civilization.

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
Those graphics are incredible for the DS hardware. At least, I think they are, since I'm not entirely familiar with the DS and it's software. But I do remember reviewers everywhere talking about how great Chronicles' 3D looked, and, well, this looks a lot better. Was this a huge leap for the platform, or was Chronicles' 3D just outright shit?
Either way, seeing Sega put out something that looks wholly respectable always puts a smile on my face, even when it's over a series I've never particularly cared for! Is Sonic Team developing this? It seems pretty unfathomable to me.

Re: JESUS HELL PSO FOR DS
Yeah, I don't understand why everyone praises Chronicles' graphics. I haven't played it yet, but just from the video it looks a bit... pixelated. As if they forgot the DS lacks a texture filter (see the two versions of SM64 - the N64 version has fewer polygons but better textures than the DS version).
It does look pretty good, and if this is a prequel of the series (albeit the Online sub-series, not PS itself), maybe I'll pick it up and be formally introduced.

I heard a rumor that PS0 is a DSi-only game. Can't find a SOURCE to that claim, but that could be bad news for people who didn't want to buy that POS to play PS0...

^ Better (read: actual) scans of the Famitsu article were posted last night. From these, I was able to clear up some info and find some more details. I'll copy-paste my translation from the other fora I posted this at:
Now for some new stuff and clarifications. Let's start with photon arts. It says that when you use PP, you can pull off special "charge attacks" with weapons and techniques. These special skills are simply called "photon arts." In the case of weapons, charge attacks vary depending on the weapon. Sabers will allow you to perform an X slash at enemies while machineguns will have your character dancing around, wildly shooting at enemies. Techniques work in a similar manner. The example given is that the normal form of Resta will heal only yourself, but the "charged" version, Alresta, will heal in a large radius.
Evading has been added to your action palette. (It's the button in the middle that has an arrow arcing over a white dot.) Press this while holding the D-pad in the direction you want to move to. Just make sure you don't roll into another enemy!
Humans are the one race that survived the great war. They rebuilt their cities and began anew. Humans are the most populous and well-rounded race. They are recommended for beginning players.
During the great war, CASTs lay across the land, all deactivated. Then one day, they suddenly woke up with no recollection of past ways. They are the only race that can set traps and are recommended for intermediate players.
Newmans were born and raised on the moon, and are a good race that had long been forgotten. Though they exhibit low HP and defense, they excel at technique usage. Newmans are recommended for advanced players.
We have a new enemy name: Grinble. Also, it seems PSO's enemy classification system is back, as this creature is labeled as native.

Just noticed that just like PSO had Virtual on reference hints, this one are more obvious looking.
HUcast = Temjin
RAcaseal = Fei Yen (also had PSO reference)
RAcast = Apharmd (also had PSO reference)
