Re: Massive tsunami hits Japan (JARED MATTE MEMORIAL THREAD,
Apparently radiation levels are dropping but the alert level's been escalated from four to five (out of seven). It seems the estimates from international sources are higher than those released by japanese officials.

Also I donated some money through the Red Cross. Hopefully others can manage to do what they can too.

It seems the civilian evac crisis is over with, but the US Navy is still considering getting the hell out of dodge.

Japan Finds Tainted Food Up to 90 Miles From Nuclear Sites
No, no, not an IMMEDIATE threat, of course not! It'll only give you cancer, totally not a big deal.Yukio Edano, the chief cabinet secretary, said that spinach and milk were the only products found to have abnormally high radiation levels. The level of radioactivity found in the spinach would, if consumed for a year, equal the radiation received in a single CAT scan, he said, while that detected in milk would amount to just a fraction of a CAT scan.
“These levels do not pose an immediate threat to your health,” Mr. Edano said, adding that the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry would provide additional details. “Please stay calm.”

Meanwhile the UN has actually not forgotten about Libya amid Japan being shaken, drowned, and nuked, and French planes have actually started to take action there. Silly Gaddafi, he should have hosted an American fleet or sold them oil like Bahrain or Saudi-Arabia, then he could even get away with shooting at peaceful, unarmed protesters instead of being bombarded for fighting armed, militant rebels!

Re: Massive tsunami hits Japan (JARED MATTE MEMORIAL THREAD,
That food situation is worrying mainly because it's a reminder that, even if Fukushima ends tomorrow morning, there's still a massive recovery procedure we'll have to go through before the area is safe again.
The power is now running in Reactors 5 & 6, and water temperatures have dropped significantly in the fuel storage pools. This is great news, but 5 & 6 were the least damaged reactors, taking only tsunami damage and a few holes in the ceiling made by Tepco themselves to prevent an explosion doing the job for them. Tests are still being conducted on the trouble reactors (1-4) and the news coming out of the plant has reduced to a trickle. Just keep our fingers crossed, I guess.

I think it is as long as it's not a bottom-feeder (e.g. crustacean).

I have become interested in this just now!Malchik wrote:As long as it's made of ray-fined fish.Zeta wrote:Didn't think sushi was kosher.
Not all ray-finned fish are kosher, Marlins, Swordfish and other billfish being large, charismatic examples. It's based on "fins and scales," but even doesn't seem accurate, because those fish do have scales, but maybe their definition of scale is different from mine. Sharks and Rays (non-kosher) are definitely fish, but they have a different type of scale (if it is a scale at all) and have cartilage instead of bone, which keeps them firmly out of the ray-finned group. Ray fins are characterized by the structure of their fins, and contrast against lobe-fins, which have an arm-like structure that the fin extends from (the same structures that make up arms and legs in terrestrial vertebrates).

ANOTHER Quake in Japan! Magnitude 7.1-7.4, and centered only about 41 miles from Sendai.

We lost power for another day from that.
Lately I've been missing the days when handhelds were powered by AA batteries.

So guys, it turns out that they need fins and scales, and when the scales are removed, it doesn't tear up the flesh. That's the distinction. I'm so glad I found out!G.Silver wrote:Not all ray-finned fish are kosher, Marlins, Swordfish and other billfish being large, charismatic examples.

So are you a Jewish lover of seafood, or is this some anthropological fetish I'd rather not hear about?

The second. It's that curious place where anthropology and ichthyology overlap.

Re: Massive tsunami hits Japan (JARED MATTE MEMORIAL THREAD,
It's been a year since the earthquake happened.
The first two weeks following the earthquake were probably the most surreal of my life. I remember using every chance I got to pore over the Tepco reports and then spending entire evenings dissecting them with friends over Skype.
It really highlighted for me how the age of information has transformed the world we live in.
And of course, it highlighted our inability to devise practical ass-wiping solutions.

Re: Massive tsunami hits Japan (JARED MATTE MEMORIAL THREAD,
I was alone in the teacher's room when it happened except for one of the office staff who popped in to put something on someone's desk, then all of a sudden phone alarms went off across the room. Scared the shit of out me and the office clerk and we kind of laughed like "what the hell was that about?" Then the shaking started like 10 seconds later. What are you supposed to do in 10 seconds?
Yesterday at the exact time, 2:46 PM, a message came over the city speakers asking for a minute of silence. One minute later, there was another message to the effect of, "thank you, and please continue with your day". To my understanding, some trains were stopped for that minute.

The safest response to an earthquake is to simply wobble yourself and any valued items/property in the opposite direction of each tremor. In this way, no effect is perceived.

Also what are you going to do about that cereal ad spambot that's masquerading in his account?
