Considering how parallel Scrap Brain and Metropolis are, I'd say they were going for a completely unique tile set like they wanted for Scrap Brain Act 3.

The X games are extremely similar to the original series in terms of gameplay, and they're actually probably easier than the originals since they allow you to dash-jump, cling to walls, increase your max life energy, and so on.
