Perhaps all of the characters represent some genre of music? Sonic (look at the name!) could represent one of the many branches of rock (most likely the weak stuff), Amy could represent the bubblegum bullshit music, and Tails...well, I got nothing. Electronica, maybe?

You have to remember that this is the first time ANY pope EVER visited the United States. It's quite historic!
