Go to options and scroll to the Jewel Practice screen. Then you have to compete for stars. When I go to Options, all I have access to are TIMES, LOAD/SAVE DATA etc. There isn't a Jewel Practice screen anywhere. How do I get into this Jewel race?

When I'm at the title screen, pressing Return takes me to the Option menu (as it's already highlighted). No other key on the keyboard lets me access anything else.

I did the dumb thing of going out and buying Sonic R for £2.

Ok, so I installed it correctly and got to the start menu for the game but why can't I go anywhere from there apart from the Options menu?

It's the only place the thing lets me go, 3 other options have big red crosses on them. Why?
