The relative crudeness here really does suggest that the animated segments were one of the first things started in Sonic CD's development. The peg-like fingers and graven smirk are particularly notable.

Re: Revenge of the nerds

Ooh, that is interesting. 1947 is indeed mentioned in the MG tale, specifically the disastrous super sonic attempt, implying that's how he was born, apparently fully formed. Given his original age was "about 18," this places the games in the mid- to late-1960s at the earliest, or else time travel (o...

Re: AYE DEE DUBBLEYUU

He doesn't really post much about his Sega days. I asked about Tails Adventure a little while back and he confirmed that he designed the enemies. I knew it! I don't suppose he was forthcoming on what animals the Battle Kukku are based on, if any? Based on their name alone I was certain they are cuc...

Re: Eguchi Stalker

Something about that Eggman art just occured to me, which even shows up in the "bad ending" cinematic. His moustache resembles what it will eventually become Adventure-onward.

Re: AYE DEE DUBBLEYUU

It's really fascinating what is and isn't considered kosher vis-a-vis Japan and tetradactyl characters. It's gotten a lot of attention recently and everyone's become an expert, but they often neglect that some prominent Japanese-created characters have four-fingered hands, most notably King Koopa an...

Re: AYE DEE DUBBLEYUU

Oh, I assumed it was inspired by Knuckles, specifically this: http://info.sonicretro.org/images/e/ee/SSS-icons.png There is also a character named Fang in Sega's Dynamite Deka series. Which is neither here nor there (he debuted in 1996), but still somewhat amusing. He even has a purple theme and tri...

Re: AYE DEE DUBBLEYUU

To Flynn's credit he is actively cognizant of extra-canonical material. So it might be after the community finally got around to digging up info on Bark & Bean and discovered--what I long suspected--that they were never intended to be villains, he's now reticent to use them as such, especially now a...

Re: AYE DEE DUBBLEYUU

To be fair, they've yet only given the impression of grimness; they could in theory still be comical. That kind of subversion doesn't seem to be in Flynn's wheelhouse, however. And that's the real rub here: all the info is "hey lookee new cawacturs!" like they're jangling a ring of keys in front of ...

Re: Sega release trailer for.. Sonic CD? What?

Does anyone know the requirements for the "all stages clear!" achievement? 'Cause unless I'm being more dense than usual it's not by activating by completing, y'know, all stages. They can't mean in all eras? Oh, and, nice job picking the "spilled rings" SFX for the Sega Forever jingle, ie, the sound...

They miscolored Metal Sonic's auricles and jet intake, too. I wonder what it is about him that toymakers always botch something.

Re: Revenge of the nerds

Hmm yes, they're free of the egg and thus unencumbered by history, unbound by old duties and grudges. The past is a burden to those defined by it, like Knuckles and Shadow(who emerges from an egglike capsule) etc. A bit of a clarification, more of an addendum: the winged rings are likely an allusion...

Re: Revenge of the nerds

Eggman represents potential sure, but he's categorically a manchild whose time to mature -- ie, hatch -- is long since past. He harbours in him a distorted past, rendered fetid by a warped nostalgia; he is the rotten egg wherein the contents aren't just bad but threaten to contaminate everything els...

Re: Revenge of the nerds

Anyhoo, has anyone else sense a general background theme of eggs in general and birds in particular? The one thing all races in the series with detailed ancient history -- the Echidnas, the Chao, and the Babylon Rogues -- have in common is oviparous reproduction. Even Eggman, viviparous that he is, ...

She's got a decent balance of warm and cool colors. Her name lacks cadence (not even in the Sega canon are all characters X the Specie. jesus). Otherwise, a resounding meh. Lemur, though... Re: Yuji Naka joins Square Enix

Big companies prefer to stick to established IPs these days (unless there's some paradigm shift I'm not perceiving) and SE is most known for their RPGs and Naka is more an action game guy (Phantasy Star aside). So would he be working on Tomb Raider or, of all things, Gex? It'd be amusing if it were ...

Re: Revenge of the nerds

Tripel Trouble ends with Sonic or Tails releasing Knuckles from imprisonment. The implication is most likely that Knuckles discovered that the doctor was up to No Good again sometime after the Tidal Plant Zone boss fight. However it's ambiguous enough that it could've been a (needle)mole operation t...
