Re: We few, we happy, we Smash Bros. in arms.

There's no getting around it. The inclusion of Zero Suit Samus in Smash Bros is stupid. It's like making a playable fighter out of "Link, from that one part of the game where he gets his sword and shield stolen and has to do a stealth mission". Zero Suit Samus is just Samus with all her shit missing...

I hope "alternate dimension" Knuckles has his old proportions and they all make fun of how small he looks.

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

As an exercise, I tried taking my own crack at the new Sonic design... that is, a variation of the design that I liked, but that still incorporated all the elements they seem to want to prioritize with this. (Taller and leaner, scarf, tape everywhere, etc.) This is what I came up with: http://25.med...

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

The Sonic CD of 3D Sonic is a great description, since like Sonic CD, I thought I loved it at first and I've come to realize I actually hate it. Ha! I am also big on the exploration element. It's my favourite part of platform games, and of previous 3D Sonics like Colours and Generations. And in that...

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

Woody's arms ARE the same colour as his body! He's just also wearing a vest, because it's important he look like a cowboy. Popeye was created for a black and white comic strip; he has wide white arms because they go in front of his solid black shirt all the time. (As do the arms of the main characte...

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

That Shadow render is great because it's a perfect example of a bad, poor-reading pose for his design. His left arm is totally lost in front of his headspines like that. Look, I'm not saying Sonic's arms should have been blue from the beginning or that they were wrong before. I'm saying the pink arm...

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

Well, Shadow and Silver have terrible character designs, so I don't know if they are the best examples. But also, in their games, you primarily see them from behind, so a different arm colour wouldn't necessarily provide much of a benefit. Smile, I am glad Sonic's peach arms give you all those emoti...

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

Here's the thing. The primary way you are supposed to make arms read clearly is with strong poses that keep them distanced in relation to the body. (As they are in the original version of that image.) If you can achieve that, you then do want the arms to be the same colour as the character, so they ...

You're right! I didn't register that. LAME "The clothing argument was a big one," said Rafei, leaning back in his chair in Big Red Button's conference room. "The most surreal moment in my life occurred when I was conveying with passion through a translator to the 'Sonic' team in Japan why Sonic need...

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

Honestly, I think why it rubs some people the wrong way is it isn't ENOUGH of a redesign. I mean, c'mon. Amy and Tails look exactly the same as before. Sonic is a little bit taller, with the same head/body proportion adjustment given to all slightly taller Sonic characters. Only Knuckles has been al...

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

Personally, I think they're just... er... hedging their bets. They don't know how popular the new game and show are going to be. If it tanks, it's a spin-off. If it's huge, maybe it gets upgraded to become the "main" franchise. (Although even if it does, assuming a two year cycle, there may still be...

Re: RIP Greg Martin. Also Sonic the Screensaver

I wonder if he WAS referenced from the Japanese artwork, in lieu of anyone caring enough about the character to provide an alternate design? The whole model adherence had gotten pretty bizarre by that time. I mean, at the same time they got Martin to switch to drawing the revised Sonic, they ALSO go...

Re: RIP Greg Martin. Also Sonic the Screensaver

Considering how on-model all the other characters he drew were (Disney, Hannah Barbara, Looney Tunes, Pseudo-anime), I'd imagine Martin could have drawn Sonic to look like any character model sheet they gave him. But of course, SEGA of America didn't like the character art Sonic Team produced for So...

Re: Sonic 2 mobile with Hidden Palace

For those of you playing on phones, I do really recommend picking up a controller. I have this one... it works great with my Nexus 4. (You can use it with i-devices, too, since Sonic supports the iCADE standard.)

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

Played this last night! It's pretty boring, even in comparison to the other 2D stages in Lost World. The aesthetics are nice, though... a nice capturing of the art style of the original game, and a couple great Mario-and-Sonic-styled full instrument remixes of a classic Mario tunes.

Re: Sonic 2 mobile with Hidden Palace

This was fun! There are aspects of the design that make it feel a LITTLE out of place compared to the rest of Sonic 2 -- a couple particularly brutal run-straight-into-a-badnik object placements, and a boss fight that doesn't really match the style of the others in the game (despite being very creat...

Re: Sonic 2 mobile with Hidden Palace

On twitter, Stealth said that the song they did use (the Mystic Cave 2P music) was used in prototypes that had a working Hidden Palace Zone, and that Masato Nakamura's demos indicated the famous 0x10 song was intended for a cutscene. (Which would explain why it's such a short loop.) So there you go,...

I'm seriously considering switching to using my PC as my primary device for cross platform stuff. I will almost certainly get a PS4 eventually, though, just because I really like Naughty Dog games and Ratchet and Clank.

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

True enough, although the more I play this the more I wonder if abandoning most of it would be such a bad thing. Despite my complaints, there's a fair amount of ideas in Lost World that I enjoyed. I just am not certain that there's enough juice in any of those ideas to fill another game. I don't thi...

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

The snowball stage is possibly the perfect example of one of the game's biggest problems... because I actually like the snowball stage! I dig those kind of games, and I've played a bunch of them, so I found it a reasonably competent and not especially difficult spin on the formula. But why the heck ...

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

I just arrived at World 4. Sonic's new control scheme is interesting, and the variable speed and parkour moves open up a lot of interesting avenues for more open, multi-tiered design... but so far, only two or three of the twelve stages have really taken advantage of it. The rest (ie: the bulk) of t...

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

Hashimoto did do some interviews for Unleashed, in which he says the initial pitch/concept document for the game was created by him and the art director, Sachiko Kawamura, and that the core idea of Werehog character than emphasized arm movement over leg movement was their idea, as...
