The concept is certainly not the most far-fetched thing Sega has put Sonic through, so I'd see this as a likely possibility.

Sonic 2 is the one I've played the most. Sonic 1 requires more focus and S&K3 is too long, while Sonic 2 is a decent length and pretty automatic for me at this point. I'm not really sure how I got here though.

Sonic 1 (Gen/MD) will be unlockable. Now all the kiddies will get a chance to see his roots and will probably still say that SA2 Battle, Sonic 06, or wherever else they started with was much better.
