Re: New Sonic game for 2015

No one's going to remember this show, not unprompted at least. Not to beat the Donkey Kong Country similarities further into the earth, but the show was officially uploaded in its entirety on YouTube for free and in the best quality it's ever been; that happened nearly two years ago and the first ep...

Re: New Sonic Art Book

If this is intended to have broad appeal, then why the limited quantity? "First Print" thing going on here? I regret not getting the Prohías Spy vs Spy omnibus because I wasn't even aware it was being published, but now it costs a fortune to buy via second-hand/scalper. This book has enough negative...

Re: Revenge of the nerds

Was there ever an in-game explanation for the item monitors? I could have sworn that the Sonic 1 US manual said that they were brought along by Eggman to South Island as item caches, but looking at it just now that doesn't appear to be the case. Could some sort of friendly entity be leaving them be...

Also, wouldn't having metal plates on his shoes make him more conductive for electroshock? Those electrodes must have been for such a contingency.

That doesn't remove the tech embedded in Hydrocity, Lava Reef, and Hidden Palace, though. Those switches were present in every island Eggman invaded: http://www.soniczone0.com/games/sonic1/springyard/full/s1-syz-act1img2full.png http://www.soniczone0.com/games/sonic2/metropolis/full/s2-mz-structure...

Re: New Sonic Art Book

All these years, I was so sure that Mecha Sonic was designed by Americans, his sprite's so awkard and cluttered. Guess this means it's a Yasushi Yamaguchi creation, then, would've thunk.

Re: Revenge of the nerds

I dunno, Flickies have mastery of Teleporter Rings, and they likely qualify as just barely sapient. It at most says the Emeralds -- or whatever powers that be -- ordains who can and cannot use them. Moreover, it's a common sci-fi/high fantasy trope that potent magic stunts technological growth. As f...

Re: Revenge of the nerds

The shoes could have been brought to him by one of the flying animal buddies from the world below. Or made right there. They might've had their own little civilization going on, as evinced by Carnival Night and the Balloon festival + ski resort on Icecap. Yeah, it's a little ambiguous as to what th...

Interestingly, no Knuckles. Come to think of it, we don't really have any evidence he ever drew Knuckles, apart from maybe some of the Screensaver images.

Re: Revenge of the nerds

Ever think of where Knuckes got his shoes? I mean, none of his ancestors wore high tops, opting instead for sandals (and, erm, modern gloves), not to mention they look rather new. If he's isolated for his whole life, and effectively impoverished, how'd he get them? Perhaps they were a gift from Eggm...

Re: Touch me!

Oh, I thought that might be the case, but the game doesn't seem to be registering the accelerometer. I guess I should be thankful it's compatible with my device at all, and the devs managed to sync achievements to my account rather than the device. It's far too common for either of those to not work...

So yeah, I enjoyed King Tongue enough to unlock all the achievements, but the Gravity Home one eludes me. What exactly am I supposed to, here? Nothing seems to be interactable. There's no useful FAQ for this game, either...

Re: Nintendo Switch & Mario Adventure

I remember it was wryly treated as a monkey's paw wish when Sonic was announced for Smash Bros. but had two spindashes. Sonic is perceived as being that shallow and limited, and that they would've been happier with moves curbed from that shitty GBA arena brawler. I never really worked out the merits...

Re: Nintendo Switch & Mario Adventure

Well, confession time: a lot of Sonic's nuances aren't something I grokked until the advent of the internet. Namely, speed-caps and rolling-lock, which finally accounted for Sonic's "quirks." And even some of the finer points of the insta-shield were lost on me, like its function to overwrite rollin...

Re: Nintendo Switch & Mario Adventure

But you did suss it out! But games back then had the luxury of being the only thing your childhood self could play for months on end, a weekend rental at the least. There are so many alternatives these days, often gratis*, kids can be feckless and move on to the next thing. Sonic has already become ...

Re: Nintendo Switch & Mario Adventure

I think it might stem more from a lack of confidence than laziness. Like you pointed out, having something as subtle as birds alighting on an invisible platfrom is clever. But the lowest common denominator doesn't cotton well to subtlety. I remember reading the rationale for putting a tutorial level...

Par for the course at this point. Games journalists will still get on their knees and suck the big N's dick while extolling SMB1's intuitive first level.
