Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

You also state that women are innately better at empathising as if you have any authority on the matter. Well, if you must know, here's a Wikipedia quote: Females on average score higher on measures of empathy and males on average score higher on measures of systemizing. This has been found using t...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

Judging others for liking things perceived as feminine (and therefore categorized as weak and negative) This is still a stretch to assume that men avoid those kinds of movies because of deliberate malicious (or even passive malicious) negative feelings towards women or feminine things. I think it's...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

So if guys all learn this when we're kids because we're only expected to like boy movies, isn't it men who are being discriminated against because they'll be judged if they watch a "girl" movie? And isn't that judgment just coming from other men in the first place? Maybe there is a problem here, but...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

Marketing is definitely a lot of it. There's a kind of base "assumed sexism" about the movie-going audience, which is that women will watch movies about male leads, but men don't want to watch movies about female leads, and especially don't like to watch two women talking to each other. Therefore, ...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

There is no way anyone can argue that their under-representation in our films is anything other than intentional, and not just some weird coincidence in the pursuit of an apolitical, agendaless "good story". I wonder about this. Intentional of course, nobody is "accidentally" making movies about du...

Boo-hoo. Do you want me to pat you on the head and give you some warm milk?

Sorry, but I'm too busy eating caviar and controlling little people from my blackberry sitting on my big white man easy chair.

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

I'll take that as a concession.
Gun activists and Catholics aren't systematically oppressed by society.
I don't know about the former. Have you ever been to south Louisiana? I don't recommend it.

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

Um... women aren't a minority? And by referring to the "majority" as something to be feared - to be kept safe from while you stick to your own kind - aren't you "otherizing" yourself? Now who's discriminating? You read interviews with directors where they talk about the changes Lasseter encourages, ...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

To give more examples using the Hitman trailer, a gun control activist might single out the gun violence as a bad message or a Catholic might choose to take offense at the portrayal of nuns. It all misses the point.
Up has exactly the same plot as The Incredibles, too

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

as if identifying with an ideology (horror!) corrupts us from some truer, baser state of apolitical innocence. "Apolitical innocence" is not the terminology I'd use, but it does color your thinking and in extreme cases - and the longer you affiliate with a cause, the more extreme your devotion to i...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

You're actually doing a terrific job of demonstrating exactly what I'm talking about - being so wrapped up your political worldview that it's tinting your perception of everything else including the movies you watch. The Incredibles is not a reflection of anything except what you choose to see in it...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

The problem that REALLY exists is the reverse: creatives are discouraged from making movies about women and minorities, even when they WANT to, because studios think everyone who isn't a white dude or Will Smith is "risky". But that's the exact same thing as my point - politics threatening creativi...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

Do you accept that what you call a "holy war" might actually have a useful purpose? So what's the useful purpose of nit-picking over movies because they don't further an agenda? No, I do not accept that a "holy war" might have a useful purpose. It may have started from a good idea, but when it reac...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

I have zero respect for political ideology of any kind and the last thing I want is to have it compromise an otherwise great story. Am I sexist because I think it's completely ridiculous to criticize the entire Pixar catalog because it doesn't meet the narrow-minded standards of some political or so...

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

I've been wondering about that. I'm assuming there's a big something or somethings pivotal to anything making sense that they're struggling not to give away in the trailers. It seems like everything they've shown is from the first 20 or so minutes of the film before anything, y'know, happens . At le...

Re: Electronic Entertainment Exhibition, feat. Usher & Flo R

Pikmin's one of those games I always meant to play and in retrospect I'm not sure why I never did. I think I heard it described as an RTS at the time, which was an instant turn-off for me (and still would be), but watching gameplay videos it seems to only meet the RTS criteria by a broad stretch of ...

Artistic license, then? That occured to me while I was thinking, "Why didn't they use Sagat?" and then realized it wouldn't have been nearly as funny.

It's still not particularly funny.

Re: Dinsey's Wreck-It Ralph: A love-letter to videogames

I do not think this movie looks very good and I guess I'm too old to get giddy about cameos, but one thing keeps bothering me: seriously, has Zangief ever been a villain? He must have been at some point? I have only vague, mostly repressed memories of that old Street Fighter live action movie and I ...

Re: Electronic Entertainment Exhibition, feat. Usher & Flo R

One interesting comment I think I saw from a couple of different developers - and this makes perfect sense though I never thought about it before - is that it's best to start new franchises or generally try new things around a console launch. I wish Nintendo had that thinking.

Re: Incredibly mundane technical question, ver.2

I never use MP3 dumps because it's a lossy format, which to my understanding makes it impossible to get accurate timing (especially on PCE which is even more finicky than Mega-CD). You can find lossless BIN/WAV dumps anywhere now, though, and there are still minor sync issues even when playing direc...

It isn't really quirky, though. It is my favorite Xbox 1 game, and still actually the only game from Double Fine that I've ever particularly liked.

But it's not especially quirky.
