Re: What are you playing today?

The courses in modern Mario Kart are explicitly not lifted from the games. They are concepts ("airport", "San Francisco", "Candyland") that have had a Mario theme applied to them. The roster is pretty uninspiring. I don't think it's a particularly pressing issue, but when you consider that 7 charact...

Re: What are you playing today?

Coming into Mario Kart 8 out of Sonic & All-Stars, I'm struck by how much better themed MK8 is. Literally everything is Mario-themed in some way, with the possible exception of the (pointless) "Crazy Eight" item. It's like playing through a Mario-themed Disneyland. The replay feature at the end of e...

It depends entirely on what you didn't like about those games.

Re: New Sonic game for 2015

Amy is a very transparent love interest/Smurfette for Sonic's group of friends. Creating a love interest for Sonic isn't a completely terrible idea, but Amy is conspicuously the "deviation from the default" - all the other major (male) animal characters have some innate defining trait, but Amy's def...

Re: Of obscure(ish) digital adventure.

As for Starship Titanic, the book was so terrible I'm not sure I want to play a game based on it anytime soon. The book ("Douglas Adam's Starship Titanic") was not written by Douglas Adams, and was based on the game rather than vice-versa. It was instead written by Terry Jones, of Monty Python fame...

Re: Sonic 2 mobile with Hidden Palace

I'm not super thrilled about shoehorning in more features that don't really belong in the game (I feel like a Taxman remake of Super Mario Brothers would feature the Tanooki Suit and playable Luigi/Peach/Toad), but the restored content will be interesting to play through, if only to finally get some...

Re: Of obscure(ish) digital adventure.

Starship Titanic was an adventure game by Douglas Adams that I rarely hear people talk about. It was a relatively mainstream game in the UK at the time. The company that made it folded shortly after release, so it's officially abandonware. The game has Adams' signature writing style all over it, fr...

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

I'm probably gonna pick up a 2DS and Wii U by the end of the year, pending confirmation of UK prices. Although now that Nintendo is basically admitting that 3D is just a gimmick, it feels like there's even less reason for developers to target their platform versus iOS/Android.

Re: Mo' hardware, mo' problems

It seems like a pretty strong lineup to me. Combine it with a price drop and I bet you'll see strong Wii U sales. There are probably lots of people, like me, who are anticipating a price drop and not buying for that reason. I guess that's the risk of price drops; once you establish a track record (e...

Re: Mo' hardware, mo' problems

Well played, Sony. Microsoft has its work cut out trying to persuade us that things like a persistant online connection and cloud-based game licensing are things that we ought to desire rather than fear. We know it can be done - it's been done before . Microsoft could still salvage things through gr...

Re: Mo' hardware, mo' problems

The details of the DRM are out, and they're about as bad as we could have expected. Game publishers will have control over if and how you sell/trade your games on Xbox. It's nice to see that there's a bit of pushback on this. I doubt it will come to much; people have been putting up with similar me...

Re: Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Exclusive

The Werehog was not at the same level of stroke-inducing stupidity as Shadow, but it was still totally out of place and cause for any rational person to raise serious questions about how it could have been green-lit. I'm not interested in Sonic doing anything new. Or Zelda. Or Mario. Or any other ol...

Re: Mo' hardware, mo' problems

I'm not losing any sleep over it. From a privacy perspective, it's just an extrapolation of the existing Kinect capabilities, and the same facial recognition technology exists in practically every smartphone. The DRM seems a little draconian, but then again this is just a patent and not a confirmed ...

I guess it's a bit creepy, but what exactly are criminals going to do with your reaction rates or emotional states? That data will presumably be anonymised and it's not particularly sensitive to begin with. Google routinely collects personal data in a much more suspect (and comprehensive) manner. No...

Re: Mo' hardware, mo' problems

Backwards compatibility has really hamstrung Windows so I can't blame them for wanting a fresh start with Xbox. Plus it's a problem that tends to solve itself eventually, either through publicly available emulator projects or commercial ports. It is kind of weird that they have such strength of conv...

Re: Mo' hardware, mo' problems

The PR dance trying to avoid describing the online requirements is really great. I actually have some sympathy with the decision to axe backwards compatibility, but way to insult your existing customers who've invested in your ecosystem by labelling them "backwards".

Re: Sonic ..Excursion?

I'm all for a story that's handled well and that adds to the gameplay. Ideally the two would be integrated as much as possible. Sonic and Tails' friendship seems like an obvious place to start. Usually Tails is either a totally superfluous add-on who regenerates immediately upon death, or he's locke...

Re: Sonic ..Excursion?

Starting with Sonic 06, virtually every Sonic game was done with a different person at the helm. Usually once the game was released, that person seemed to disappear from the team (although there are some exceptions). Then with Sonic 4/Sonic Colours, Iizuka returned to the top spot. It's not clear i...
