Weren't there large parts of the gaming press that were optimistic about Sonic 4. In fact, I still see some journalists talk about it in a fond way. I'm guessing these are people who don’t remember the Mega Drive games too well beyond Sonic = 2D.

This policy of taking more time for better quality came in after the first Sonic Boom.

Sonic Boom Fire and Ice, Sonic Forces and Team Sonic Racing were all delayed to allow for more development time. Forces in particular was delayed by over a year. And it was still rather bad, so....

I had the Sonic 2 one. For what it was, it was surprisingly okay. Given the constraints that had, they did a lot with it.

It's too bad they didn’t have the budget to redo all the art in pixel form. Although to be honest, I think once I am playing, the art won't be an issue.
